Sierra Leone Project

Amongst one of the world’s poorest nations, Sierre Leone is most famous for blood diamonds, civil war and the Ebola Virus.

Most recently ranked 182 out of 189 in the United Nations 2020 Human Development Index, more than 60% of the population of Sierra Leone live below the national poverty line on less than $1.25 per day.

And, whilst the youth population, aged 15 – 35, makes up a third of the population 70% are unemployed or underemployed.

Yet, for all it’s challenges Sierre Leone is a beautiful land with strong communities and sadly stories of magnificent wildlife, stunning beaches or incredible, welcoming and friendly people of Sierra Leone are rarely the ones we hear.

With its name drawn from Krio, the most widely spoken language in Sierra Leone, it is no surprise that Make Ways Foundation has its sights set on creating opportunities in this community.

70% of Sierra Leonean's aged between 15 - 35 are unemployed.

By making ways, we can make a difference.

Make Ways Foundation’s Sierra Sport program has:

  • Established a locally owned, preloved sporting goods store in Sierra Leone
  • Provided ongoing employment for young adults
  • Offered the local community access to donated, high quality sport shoes, clothing and equipment that would otherwise be unavailable.

The store offers sponsorship for vulnerable children, orphans and young people to participate in life-changing running programmes focused on health and personal development.

By providing locals with sustainable employment and sporting goods, as well as opportunities to support their own health and wellbeing, Make Ways Foundation foster a sense of unity and purpose in the community.
